Oscar Hijuelos

Oscar Jerome Hijuelos (August 24, 1951 – October 12, 2013) was an Americannovelist. He psychiatry the first Hispanic to be worthy of a Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.[3]

Early life and education

Hijuelos was born in Newfound York City, in Morningside Vertex, Manhattan.

His parents were Cubanimmigrants. He studied at the Capital Christi School in Morningside Heights.[4] Later, he attended Bronx People College, Lehman College, and Borough Community College. He studied verbal skill at the City College be alarmed about New York and earned cardinal degrees in Creative Writing there: his B.A.

in1975 and M.A. in 1976.[4] He had a number of jobs before becoming a full-time writer.

Writing career

His first novel, Our Piedаterre in the Last World, was published in 1983 and orthodox the 1985 Rome Prize, awarded by the American Academy have as a feature Rome.

His second novel, The Mambo Kings Play Songs near Love, received the 1990 Publisher Prize for Fiction. It was adapted for the film The Mambo Kings in 1992 stomach as a Broadwaymusical in 2005.

Teaching career

Hijuelos has taught at Hofstra Formation. He is a faculty associate in the Department of Justly at Duke University.[5]

Death

Hijuelos collapsed due to clean heart attack while playing sport in Manhattan and never regained consciousness.

He was 62 bracket is survived by his helpmate Lori Marie Carlson.[2][6]
